My name is Nick Thorogood. I am from the UK, originally from a county called Hertfordshire England. I am co-owner and co-founder of Odyssey movement in Canggu. I run the fitness side of odyssey movement. Me and partner also run a fitness studio, yoga studio, café, boutique, retreats, and yoga teacher trainings. We have been running and managing this for two years so far.

I was always really into sport. Since I was three or four years old I always wanted to kick footballs around or just playing around at the park. I love football, rugby, tennis. I like to run. I like to hike though I am not so big on the water sports. Always kind of into the traditional sports and team sports. Especially weighs, I got into fitness when I was about 10 and I got obsessed with it.

I also love to teach boxing. I got into boxing when I was about twelve years old. Me and my brother used to argue a lot and our mom suggested us to get into boxing lessons which is now a big part of my life.

My mom got cancer, when she was diagnosed with cancer, our family were pretty distraught. We were thinking on what should we do. It was a wake-up call for everyone in the family, including me. Since then I started learning about what is health and why health is so important.

During that period of time, I learnt a lot about nutrition. What we eat is really important. We are what we eat. If we don’t invest since we are young we are going to feel the effect when we are old and it’s going to be too late to realize. We have to invest on it since we were young.

At first I see Yoga as a way into fitness. But in yoga itself, I found spirituality. I learnt so much about spirituality, breathing, meditation and ahimsa. It becomes more holistic. I applied all of that to my family first and into myself. From there, it became the thing that I do, my job. As a health coach and a yoga teacher.

I was working in the corporate world. I was a headhunter. It was quite far away from listening to your heart and being spiritual and I was not very happy in that context, in that situation. I just came to a point where I didn’t want to be unhappy anymore. So I just quit and changed my life for the better

My life journey leads me to Bali where I have a strong bond already since the first time I visited here in 2000. It was something that I need to experience to become whole again. We come here to heal even we will find different ways of calling that. We might not call it healing but it is a way to seek, to feel whole again.

This is where I started to get deep into Yoga. The word yoga means unifying. It’s a way to stretch and strengthen your body and your mind. It’s a way to begin to feel the connection between the physical, the mental, and the heart. I have been practicing yoga since and I am also sharing my knowledge about it at Samadi.

I’m from the United States. I grew up in Seattle, Washington and then I lived for many years in a place called Santa Barbara, California. In 1984 long time ago I left the states. I traveled around the world for two years and then I moved to Paris. I was in Paris for seven years full time and then decided to see a bit more of the world. So I started working in the international schools. My first job was in Jakarta. I worked at Jakarta International School and then I went to Ecuador, Nepal, China, and Azerbaijan. Then I decided to find a place to settle. Bali was just one of the place I looked at and it just happened. Everything worked out when I came to look at Bali. I call it a series of fortunate events.

I came here to open a yoga house. Many people doubted me when first opened. But I believe in myself and I believe on this place. Because why would anyone not want to do Yoga here. It’s beautiful and surrounded with the ricefields.
